Alkanet

Alkanna tinctoria · Boraginaceae
In one paragraph

Alkanet is a borage relative whose root holds alkannin, a naturally deep red pigment that dissolves readily into oil. It is not used for any effect on skin — it is a colourant, and the only reason it appears in a formula is to give an oil or balm a natural red tone without synthetic pigment.

How Nurtur Health uses it

Alkanet root is infused into oil where a warm red colour is wanted. It is the most honest ingredient in the range in one sense: it does one job, and that job is visible.

Traditional use

Used as a dye plant for centuries, in textiles and in cosmetics. Its cosmetic tradition is entirely about colour.
