How to oil cleanse without breaking out: a five-step method
Oil cleansing works on the principle that like dissolves like: a plant oil massaged into dry skin loosens the sebum, sunscreen and pollution that water-based cleansers leave behind, and a warm cloth then lifts all of it away. Done correctly it takes ninety seconds and leaves skin soft rather than tight. Done impatiently — too much oil, water too hot, cloth too rough — it causes exactly the congestion people fear.
Choosing your oil
Skin type decides this, not marketing. Jojoba is structurally closest to human sebum and is the safest starting point for oily and combination skin. Olive-infused oils are heavier and suit dry or mature skin. If you are prone to congestion, start with calendula infused in jojoba and give it two weeks before judging.
The five-step method
Skin that has been stripped by foaming cleansers for years over-produces oil, and it takes ten to fourteen days to recalibrate. If you are still congested after three weeks, switch to jojoba or stop — oil cleansing genuinely does not suit everyone, and we would rather say so than sell you a second bottle.
